A Look Back On the Costume from My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady

Entertainment and fashion were the heart of the film – My Fair Lady.

My Fair Lady was a romance/musical film released in December 1964. It starred Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, the female lead role.

Apart from the fact that she did justice to her acting and dancing styles, her dressing too was on fleek.

Character Analysis of My Fair LadyBeige Ball Gown

Audrey Hepburn is one of the very few actresses that perfectly defines elegance, kindness, class, and beauty.

She is one of the loveliest ladies ever. People loved her both on and off stage. Many believed the role of Eliza Doolittle suits her well and so do l.

The character of My Fair Lady has become a timeless piece. With her great performance, lilting tone, and accent, you cannot love her less.

What is more intriguing?

  • Is it the transformation of her accent? From being a flower girl with a cockney accent to one that speaks proper English.
  • Her transitioning into being a respected lady, whom everyone adores?
  • Enchanting young and noble Freddy Eynsford Hill with her charm.
  • Or is it the alteration of her dress from a street girl to a duchess?

Some of the My Fair Lady fans call her a living cartoon due to her way of expression.

More so, the way they express themselves through songs even made the film more interesting.

However, the voice behind many of the actors/actresses is not theirs. Even Audrey Hepburn’s songs were dubbed using Marni Nixon’s voice, as hers was not strong enough for such kind of music.

The costumes used in the film were fantabulous. Well, the credit goes to Cecil Beaton. He was the designer behind Audrey Hepburn’s styles, her transformation, and enchanting looks.

He designed over a thousand dresses for the film. The Ascot horse race is one of the most unforgettable scenes for his designs.

  • Ascot dress

This is the most iconic costume in the film and worn in the most memorable scenes. The scene featured over a hundred people.

While most of the women wore glamorous white and black gowns with elaborate hats, the men wore grey suits, except for the professor (Higgins) that wore a brown suit.

Audrey Hepburn’s Ascot dress has been the most favorite of her costumes. The original ascot dress was sold from the Debbie Reynolds collection for over $4million.

The dress is of fine lace over a silk linen undergarment.

The form-hugging long sleeve gown with turtleneck was designed with black and white stripe ribbon and bows. To cosplay, get a matching umbrella and wear an elaborate matching hat.

  • Beige Ball Gown

Another of her glamorous outfit was showcased in the Embassy Ball Scene. A beige satin with a fine tulle fabric overlay.

The designer embellished the gown with sequins, beads, and rhinestones. For a complete Audrey Hepburn style, wear opera satin gloves with a rhinestone choker.

  • Barbie Pink DressBarbie Pink Dress

I cannot forget to mention another of my favorite costumes. That is Audrey Hepburn’s Barbie dress – well, that is what most of the My Fair Lady fans call it.

The sheer pink chiffon dress was one of the incredible ideas of Cecil Beaton. It made her look like a live Barbie.

My honest observation is this – Audrey Hepburn is charming, her costumes were stunning, and she all wore them beautifully.

My Fair Lady costumes may have been some decades older, but they are still elegant and adorable in every way.
